Super Adventures is five years old today! Not a huge surprise considering that the site gets a year older at the end of every January, but worth noting I think. Also worth noting is that I've retired the tired worn out rubbish boring old 2015 logo and replaced with it a shiny new 2016 model. Less fire, more curves and pointy bits.

Last year I decided to celebrate by playing a classic Zelda game and a whole lot of Marios, and I've been struggling to think of how I could possibly follow them up. Then I saw that the GameFAQs community had come together to agree on a new Best Game Ever and I realised I had the perfect game to kick off Super Adventures in Gaming - Year Six:

This week on Super Adventures I'm having a quick look at the notorious Undertale! I've heard that it's an RPG, probably, but I'm not actually sure.

One thing I do know about the game (aside from the fact it's a contender for the 'Lowest Resolution Title Screen on Super Adventures' award), is that it's another one of those Kickstarter success stories. It didn't quite make as much as Wasteland 2 or even Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, but bringing in $51,124 wasn't bad at all considering the goal was $5000. You can bet it's made a lot more than that in the five months since release.

Everyone says to go into the game blind, so I made a special effort to keep myself utterly unspoiled on it. I've heard the terms 'pacifist route', 'genocide route' and 'skeleton date' being thrown around, but I'm fuzzy on the details. So I'm not just pretending to be clueless for this, I really am clueless.

But I can't show the game without showing the game, so I'm sorry if I end up spoiling all the potential jokes and surprises that may (or may not) be at the start. I'm only planning to play the first hour or so though, basically what's covered by the demo I expect, so I with any luck I won't be giving the game away.

Top 3 Commands to Teach Your Dog Around Visitors

Dogs are naturally curious and excited when meeting new people. Unfortunately guests may not always appreciate their enthusiasm, therefore it is important to teach your dog appropriate behavior around visitors.

1. Quiet

The quiet command is especially important for dogs that go bark crazy whenever a stranger steps foot in the house or even just rings the doorbell.

There are two main methods to teach your dog the quiet command. The first involves letting your dog bark incessantly and waiting until they stop on their own. As soon as they become silent, even if only for a few seconds, say “quiet” followed by positive reinforcement (praise and a treat). The second method involves teaching your dog to bark on command. Once your dog barks every time you say “speak”, you can then begin to say “quiet” and wait for them to stop barking followed by the treat.

2. Down

Even if your guests like your dog, they generally won’t appreciate grubby paws on their nice outfits. This is where the down command becomes useful.

It can be tempting to greet your dog in an excited manner whenever you arrive home to see them, but that is actually reinforcing their jumping behavior. It is best to teach your dog to ‘sit’ or ‘lay down’. Once they have learned these commands, you can then ask your dog to do those alternate actions instead of jumping. Once again, reward the correct behavior with praise and a treat.

3. Corner

Teaching your dog to go to their corner, crate, bed, or even just another room will prevent them from being an annoying distraction around visitors.

The first step is to choose a quiet, safe place for your dog which is in a corner or out of the way. When your dog goes to this area on their own, say the command and reward them with a treat. Another method is to call over or physically bring your dog to the safe area, followed by the word “corner” and positive reinforcement. Once your dog associates this area with the command and positive rewards, you can begin to say the word and they should walk there on their own.

Commands should initially be practiced and achieved in a controlled environment before introducing your dog to guests in a calm manner. Appropriate behavior from your dog will keep both them and visitors happy.

This week on Super Adventures, I'm finally taking a look at Painkiller, a first person shooter made by Gears of War: Judgment developer Epic Games Poland back when they were still called People Can Fly. Oh hang on, they're back to being People Can Fly again now... and they still have the Bulletstorm license! They'd better be working on making me a sequel right now, I don't care how much the game bombed.

There's about a million different editions of Painkiller and just as many expansions, but as I understand it Black Edition is as close as you can get to the definitive version. It's the original 2004 Painkiller game plus the one expansion developed by People Can Fly, with a 'making of' video thrown in. The game later got a remake/sequel called Painkiller: Hell and Damnation (HD, get it?) but judging by the reviews I've read, seems Black Edition's the one to go for.

Winter Safety Tips for Your Pets

Brrrrrr... it's cold outside. At least where I live. I live in Northern Illinois and we have had some severe cold weather recently. And since we take care of animals for a living I decided to write a post about some winter safety tips for your pets.

Below are just tips to keep in mind during the winter months to keep your pets safe:

Ice Melt: A lot of states put down ice melt on roads, driveways, sidewalks, etc. This ice melt is actually a chemical and can cause severe chemical burns if it gets in between the pads of your dogs paws. Best thing to do is rinse your dogs paws after each walk in a bowl of warm water making sure you get in between the pads.
Walking: If you are walking your dog every day or a couple of times a day, make sure you keep an eye on the temperature. Dogs can get hypothermia just like people do. Their paws, eyes, ears, nose can all freeze when the temperatures drop. Best thing to do is walk long enough to do their potty business and then bring them inside for extra playtime.
Outdoor Cats/Dogs: If you have outdoor dogs or cats you can make their lives a little more comfortable while outside in cold temperatures. Try building them an outdoor shelter. There are many links on Google to help you in determining the products required to build it. Also make sure they have plenty of fresh water and food. Make sure the food and water bowls are plastic and not metal. Their tongues may stick to metal.
Lots of Fresh Water: All pets require a bit more water during the dry winter months. You may already be noticing your dog or cat drinking more. The dry heat from furnaces etc., tend to dry everyone out (dogs, cats, people). Keep plenty of fresh drinking water out and on hand.
Car Engines: Be careful with outdoor cats and wildlife. Warm engines in a parked car can attract cats and wildlife looking for a warm place to cozy up. To avoid injury, bang on your car hood a few times to scare them out before getting in the car and starting the engine.
Antifreeze Poisoning: Avoid antifreeze poisoning by wiping up any spills and store antifreeze up and away from pets and children.

Remember.. if it is too cold for you, it is too cold for your pet. Bring them inside.

This week on Super Adventures I'm playing SNES game Holy Striker, better known as 'Fire Striker' in the US and 'absolutely nothing' in Europe as they didn't bother to release it here. No great mystery why Nintendo of America decided to tweak the title when they brought it over, seeing how keen they weren't on religious references in their games.

That's pretty much the only thing I know about the game, but I've just loaded up its Wikipedia page and apparently it's a "piece of high carbon or alloyed steel from which sparks are struck by the sharp edge of chert or similar rock". Uh... what the hell's chert? Also, is there really no page for the game Fire Striker? Have I finally found something Wikipedia's never heard of?

Oh duh, I was just spelling it wrong; it's FireStriker without the space. You know what, forget the wiki page, I'd rather come into it blind anyway.

Hang on a second, there's three choices on the title screen and not one of them says 'OPTIONS'! Super Nintendo games are supposed to give me an options screen so I can put my lives count up and stuff. Instead there's a mysterious 'MULTI MODE' option sitting in its place, which is apparently different enough to '2 PLAYERS' to get to appear alongside it. I'll have to remember to try that out later.

From the NON-GAME to the GAME

Jesper Jull, in his book Half-Real (2005, p.36), contextualizes a game as the union of six elements: fixed rules, variable outcome, valorization of outcome, player effort, player attachment to the outcome, and negotiable consequences.

On the other hand, Juul understands that in the opposite side of games we can find the “not games”: the movies, books, children playing, and other activities that does not meet the previously mentioned gaming features. However, between the non-games and games we can see a gray area made up of elements that bring together some gaming features; Juul calls this area as borderline cases.

But the question here is: is it possible for a content to transit through these three areas? The answer is yes. Let’s take as an example the work of Howard Philips Lovecraft, the author behind the Cthulhu mythos. Lovecraft’s original content are horror books full of cosmic demi-gods and abyssal creatures (non-games); but the books’ narratives were transformed in paper and pen role playing games (a borderline case that reunites some elements from games); finally it’s possible to play the computer game Dark Corners of The Earth, one product that unites all the characteristics of a game, as Juul says. This week on Super Adventures I'm looking at the second Indiana Jones point and click adventure game, Fate of Atlantis, and wondering why they've put a colour cycling effect on the logo. That didn't happen in the movies... did it? I don't own the films so I can't check.

I should make it clear that this is Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis: The Graphic Adventure I'm playing, as like Last Crusade this has a separate Action Game to go along with it. Though unlike Last Crusade this has its own original story, there never was a 'Fate of Atlantis' film, so the Action Game is actually a video game tie-in... to a video game. I'm pretty sure I had a 'Fate of Atlantis' comic book once as well, but it'd take an archaeologist to find the damn thing now.

The game came out after Lucasfilm Games were renamed to LucasArts, so I'm hoping I'll get to see an animation of the Gold Guy logo man doing something at the start.

3 Dental Hygiene Tips for Dogs

Healthy teeth are essential for a happy dog and a big slobbery smile. Neglecting to care for canine teeth can lead to bad breath and discomfort when eating. Managing your dog’s oral hygiene can be a battle, but it can be conquered.

1. Brush, brush, brush!

Just like humans, the best method to combat plaque build up on canine teeth is by brushing. Children's toothbrushes work well because they are generally softer and smaller than adult types. Dog toothbrushes are also available which are soft and fit over your fingertip for ease of use. It is important to use a specifically formulated dog toothpaste as human ones are toxic to dogs.

Brushing should be introduced to puppies with lots of positive reinforcement. Small treats can be given at first to associate brushing with praise and reward. Older dogs can be introduced to brushing with the same technique. If your dog completely detests the toothbrush approach, dental pads are available for wiping the teeth and gum line free of bacterial build up.

2. Oral care food and treats

The type of food that you feed your pooch makes a difference for their teeth. Dry food diets are better for dental health than canned foods. There are also specialised dental diets available. They have a larger sized biscuit which helps to support clean teeth by facilitating the crunching action.

Dental treats and rawhide chews are widely available. Chewing promotes clean teeth by helping to prevent plaque and tartar build up. Care should be taken when giving rawhide chews to your dog to prevent accidental ingestion and choking. Dogs should be supervised and chews should be taken away when they become small enough to swallow.

3. Chew toys

All dogs love a variety of fun and safe toys. Smooth rubber toys and nylon bones are good options that promote clean teeth and healthy gums. Toys such as tennis balls and frisbees are good in moderation, but have abrasive surfaces which will have a negative impact on dental health. Dogs that are allowed to chew excessively on abrasive toys will gradually wear down the enamel on the surface of the teeth. It is best to limit your dog’s playing time with such toys.

Implementing a dental care plan for your dog will only take a short time each day. Healthy teeth will keep your dog happy and smiling for years to come.
