Mr Blobby (Amiga)

Mr Blobby Title screen Amiga
Developer:Freestyle|Release Date:1994|Systems:Amiga

Blobby blobby Blobby Blobby, Blobby blobby blobby blobby blobby Blobby Blobby blobby blobby Blobby! Holy shit I hate this character and everything related to him.

If you're one of the lucky ones who've gone through your whole life blissfully unaware of this guy's existence, Mr Blobby started out as part of a segment called 'Gotcha' on 90s British light entertainment program 'Noel's House Party', where celebrities would get punk'd in a manner not unlike American hidden camera show 'Punk'd'. Mr Blobby was one of the practical jokes, designed to deliberately wind up a celebrity who thought they were interacting with a legitimate established character for an episode of a kid's TV show. Blobby would drive the unwitting guest to the very edge of homicide with his antics, then take off his head to reveal that it was famous TV host Noel Edmunds in the suit the whole time!

Obviously the series couldn't keep up the joke past the first airing as everyone would know Blobby was a fake... but the character kept turning up anyway! Then he started turning up in other shows too; he had become a celebrity in his own right. Mr Blobby merchandise filled the shops. By 1995 he had TWO top 40 songs in the UK charts, the first so bad that one critic accused him of trying to "kill music". He had no less than THREE failed theme parks! And he also had a video game, which I've been asked to play for you.

James Bond 007: Blood Stone (PC)

Blood Stone logo
Developer:Bizarre Creations|Release Date:2010|Systems:Xbox 360, PS3, PC

Today on Super Adventures, I'll be playing some Blood Stone 007, or perhaps James Bond 007: Blood Stone if you want to believe the manual.

This came out in 2010, so chronologically it slots right in the middle of the four year gap between the movies 'Quantum of Solace' and 'Skyfall' caused by MGM's bankruptcy issues. In fact Skyfall spent so long in production that this may have actually started out as a movie tie-in, so lucky escape there perhaps. Sure GoldenEye 007 is the exception that proves that movie licences don't have to be terrible, but it's also exceptional in that it stayed in development until two years after the film came out. It wasn't as rushed as they usually are.

It's been years since did my 'Every Old James Bond Game' marathon, but I remember that when I got past Goldeneye and moved onto the EA era, I started seeing the same few developer logos show up over and over: EA Redwood Shores (AKA Visceral), Black Ops Entertainment and Eurocom. But EA passed the licence to Activision in 2006, Black Ops vanished that same year, and Eurocom were busy making three other games (and got shut down two years later), so this has a whole new logo at the start. Blood Stone is the first Bond game created by Wiz 'n' Liz, Project Gotham Racing and Blur developer Bizarre Creations, and also the last as they went and closed down four months later as well! I guess that's why there hasn't been any Bond games since 2012, as every developer the franchise touches ends up dying.

Activision only put out one more Bond game before getting bored with the licence, which incidentally is probably why we haven't been able to find Blood Stone on Steam since 2013. Fortunately I was able to find it on eBay, so I won't have to draw sketches of the game from memory. Oh right, should probably mention that I played this before a few years back, so I'll be slightly less ignorant than usual and will be able to mention stuff from later in the game. Like how it plays the Bond theme about 700 times in a row on the end credits.

Game Balance

In this post, we’re going to discuss some ideas about game balance. A good mechanic and a great narrative can be destroyed if unbalanced inside the gaming universe. The logical here moves between many beta tests and iterative processes.

Rollings and Morris (2004, p.105-106) say there are three essential types of categories when we are talking about gaming balance:

Player/player balance: we can find this kind of balance in multiplayer games (Destiny, Call of Duty, Battlefield etc.). The system creates situations for newbie and experienced players trying to create a scenario of good opportunities for all. Luck is an important component here and should be available to all players.

Player/gameplay balance: this type of game usually offers a learning curve to the players. One important thing here is to develop a crescendo of challenges with some key process for the player. The more the player advances in the narrative, the more he/she has information to survive the challenge. The logical behind procedural rhetoric is finding here (http://gamingconceptz.blogspot.com.br/2013/01/procedural-rhetoric-and-games.html)

Gameplay/gameplay balance: “means that features within the game must be balanced against each other”. This balance refers to things inside the gaming world and narrative; if a special weapon causes triple damage, sounds logic to cost three or more times than one that causes double damage. This kind of guide helps us to explore balance in the beta testing sessions. It’s important to thoroughly test the game to detect errors at first, but it is essential to create a balance that will generate a great experience for the player, while the game is running.

Canine Flu and Kennel Cough on the rise in Chicago

BY:  Laurie Brzostowski, President, Snaggle Foot Dog Walks and Pet Care-Round Lake, IL

Yesterday morning I was listening to the news and heard that Canine Flu and Kennel Cough are on the rise in Chicago and is now considered a serious outbreak.

Because I own a pet sitting business I wanted to share the information with everyone who may live in the Chicagoland area.

I have already contacted my clients (past and present) just so they are aware of the situation and what our procedures are at Snaggle Foot Round Lake in making sure our clients dogs are safe.  I have also posted this information on our Snaggle Foot Facebook Page.

Here is the information regarding this outbreak.  I have separated the stories by Kennel Cough first and then Canine Flu.

Kennel Cough:
According to the report, and Dr. Natalie Marks in Chicago says it's a strain of bordetella, often called kennel cough. Other veterinarians aren't certain, and suggest it's possible that the infectious culprit could be the canine influenza virus. Cook County veterinarian and rabies administrator Dr. Donna Alexander says she's just not sure what it is.

But whatever the cause, some dogs are getting sick, and some have reportedly died.  The vaccine for kennel cough might be somewhat protective, but this bordetella strain might not be affected by the vaccine. There is a vaccine for the canine flu, but usually vaccines are suggested in places only where there is an outbreak - which might be what's happening, or not. Certainly, the bordetella vaccine is suggested anyway for all dogs who frequently encounter other dogs.

There's no need to panic, but taking logical precautions (aside from vaccine protection) might be prudent, such as first checking with your veterinarian to determine if there are reports of the virus where you live. Some areas are seeing many sick dogs, others not as much.

In areas where there are many sick dogs, consider staying away from dog parks. Some doggy daycare facilities have closed their doors as a precaution, others remain open, but you may want to consider leaving Fido at home. Dog training classes are important, but definitely talk with the instructor. Depending of how much virus is going around near you, waiting until the next session begins might be a plan, and the same is true for dogs participating in organized canine sports and activities.

Canine Flu:
One local veterinarian says there's been an increase in suspected cases of canine influenza, although there is a vaccine you can get for your pet.

Buster, a 9-year-old boxer mix, is in isolation at a Lakeview animal hospital. Ollie, a Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix, is headed in the same direction.

Both dogs have been diagnosed with pneumonia, a symptom of canine influenza.

"There has been a massive outbreak of infectious respiratory disease in the city of Chicago and suburbs," said Dr. Natalie Marks, Blum Animal Hospital.

Dr. Marks says Blum Animal Hospital has seen between five and 15 cases a day.

Waiting for test results to confirm the diagnosis, Dr. Marks and other area vets suspect the dogs have the flu. The Chicago area hasn't seen such an outbreak since 2008. Dr. Marks says canine influenza symptoms are more severe and dangerous than kennel cough.

"Dogs with influenza sick very quickly, one to three days, very lethargic, high fever, pneumonia, high-risk," Marks said.

Dogs at the highest risk are those exposed to other dogs, pets at dog parks or dog care.

Elizabeth Estes believes her dog Ollie picked it up at his doggie day care. Estes brought Ollie to the animal hospital Wednesday morning after he became sick overnight.

"Yesterday, he was running around, then all of sudden, boom, cough, rough night, no sleep," Estes said.

Because canine influenza is highly contagious with other dogs, vets recommend a flu shot; yes, they make one for dogs.

"I'll definitely get him a flu shot the next time, this is awful to watch your dog feel this way and not be able to breath," Estes said.

To control the outbreak, Marks strongly encourages every dog owner to talk to their vet about getting the vaccine.

Just like a human flu shot, it cannot be given to dogs who are already sick. Vets say the risks of the vaccine are minor, but the benefits can be major in preventing the spread of the virus.

The Kennel Cough story was reported here: http://www.chicagonow.com/steve-dales-pet-world/2015/03/chicago-dogs-getting-sick/

Is Doggie Daycare Beneficial? Yes It Is!

BY:  Laurie Brzostowski, President, Snaggle Foot Dog Walks and Pet Care-Round Lake, IL

As a pet service business owner we get all kinds of questions when we meet pet parents.  Where can I find the best vet?  Where is the best groomer located?  And... would doggie daycare be beneficial to my dog?

I always try and give pet parents the best options that I know for them.  I do my research when it comes to recommending groomers and vets and of course doggie day care facilities.

I recently met with the owner of Central Bark in Grayslake, Illinois.  Her name is Laura Bloss and I wanted to meet with her to check out her facility and get to know her and her business.

I wanted to get some background from her on the benefits and what to look for when searching for a reputable daycare center.

So I have asked Laura to fill in some blanks about Central Bark and give everyone an inside peek at the "happiest place in town"...

Dog day care has many benefits.  We can help you meet your dog's needs for attention, activity and supervision.  Day Care provides a great antidote for bored, lonely or high-energy dogs with busy parents who work all day and don't want to leave their dogs home alone

Central Bark Doggy Day Care gives your dog the stimulation, interaction, playtime, nap time and TLC they need to keep their bodies and minds happy and healthy.  Doggy Day Care is our specialty, and nobody does it better than we do.  Before placing your dog with other dogs, we perform a comprehensive behavioral assessment.  That way, we make sure your dog's play style and sociability are compatible with the appropriate playgroup to provide the consistency that every dog needs to feel confident and safe.

In addition, we require a one day a week commitment. With our furry clients coming at least once a week, we really get to know the dog’s personality which creates a safer and more fun time for everyone! We have morning play from 8am – 12pm, nap time from 12-2pm and afternoon play from 2- 4:45pm. Dogs are supervised at all times during play.

Below are some helpful tips in choosing the right day care for your dog:
  • Tour the center before leaving your dog there.
  • Is the management and staff mature, knowledgeable, courteous, professional and patient at all times?
  • Are the dogs supervised at all times?
  • How do they handle bad behavior or dog fights?

Again, I want to thank Laura for taking the time to fill us in on her Doggy Day Care.  If anyone is interested in learning more about Central Bark in Grayslake, Illinois, you can contact them at: (847) 548-2275 or to learn more about them you can go to their website at:  http://www.centralbarkusa.com/grayslake/

Renny Blaster (TurboGrafx-CD)

Developer:J-Force|Release Date:1995|Systems:PC Engine CD

Today on Super Adventures I'm ticking another title off my inexhaustible request list. It claims to be called Renny Blaster and I don't see any reason to doubt it. Maybe Lenny Blaster would've been a better way of reading the katakana on the box, but the title screen is pretty adamant it starts with an R.

It says 'TurboGrafx-CD' in my post title and labels for the sake of consistency (I strive for the highest standards of presentation for my jokey video game blog), but it'd make more sense to call this one a PC Engine game, as it never made it out of Japan. Just out of curiosity I did a quick calculation with the limited info I could find online in 3 minutes of half-assed searching, and it seems that less than a third of the console's library got a release on its American cousin. European fans of the console got it even worse, or to be more precise they got absolutely nothing. We may never solve the mystery of how the SNES and Mega Drive managed to outsell it four or five times over worldwide.

Oh right, I'm supposed to be writing about Renny Blaster. Uh... it came out in 1995, so that's pretty late for a PC Engine game, even a CD one. Castlevania: Rondo of Blood pre-dates this by a whole two years, and I always assumed that was one of the last of them. The game's also likely to be entirely in Japanese, being a Japanese game and all, but I'm hoping there won't be much text to wade through this time.

Shovel Knight (PC)

Shovel Knight title screen
Developer:Yacht Club|Release Date:2014|Systems:PC, 3DS, Wii U (soon PS3, PS4, PSVita and Xbox One)

Today on Super Adventures, I'm playing Shovel Knight's theme tune, over and over again. I'm kind of torn here because the music's saying "Go forth brave knight and hit evil with your shovel!" while on the other hand my head's saying "Hang on mate, just leave the tune playing for another minute first, okay?" Here have a YouTube link so you've got something heroic to listen to while you read: Shovel Knight Main Theme.

The soundtrack was actually created using a NES chiptune editor so that it could be as authentic as possible, give or take a few sound channels. The philosophy behind the whole game was that it should be absolutely dead-on accurate in look, sound and gameplay... to the player's fuzzy memories of their favourite NES games. It's an 8-bit game enhanced with rose-tinting technology.

Before I continue, first I have to apologise for the quality of these screenshots. Usually I try to capture pixel art in its purest unfiltered form, but the game seems determined to scale it up and ruin the clean edges. Then on top of that I needed to scale my screenshots back down again so that they fit my site, which left them so fuzzy that I figured I might as well just save them as JPEGs and save a few kilobytes.

Linear Gameplay

I want to share more knowledge from Penny Sweetser’s book Emergence in Games. Today, we’ll try to define the idea of “linear gameplay”. The logic behind a linear gameplay is that it’s a game that doesn’t offer much sense of freedom to the player. Sometimes the player could have a false sense of freedom, but as Sweetser says (2008, p.56) “the key elements of linear games are an underlying story to be discovered, puzzles to solve along the way, and a limited and predetermined set of ways to interact in the game world”.

We can find this kind of game in the classic Sonic the Hedgehog or in the new The Order 1886. Let’s check these games out to understand this idea in different moments of the gaming industry:

In the previous video, we can discuss another idea from Sweetser (2008, p.56), that “despite the continuous nature of the game worlds and the resulting freedom of movement and exploration, player interactions in these worlds are still very limited”.

We already talked about interactive fiction in a post, few weeks ago. Today, we discuss linear gameplay and soon we will analyze sandbox games based on the ideas from the excellent book Emergence in Games.

Options For Your Pets When You Go On Vacation

BY:  Laurie Brzostowski, President, Snaggle Foot Dog Walks and Pet Care-Round Lake, IL

With Spring Break right around the corner, I thought this would be a great opportunity to share the options you have for your pets when you go on vacation.

Make sure you do your research on anyone coming into your home, or anywhere you are leaving your pets.  Their safety should be your first priority.

Also when looking into these options, please do not put cost as your first priority.  It is important that you have quality care for your home and pets if you choose inhome pet sitting.  However, it is also important that you choose quality and care over price when looking at boarding facilities.

There are quite a few considerations to think about when you need to have your pets taken care.  To help you, here are 4 great options to think about.

Pet Sitters
I own a pet sitting company so of course I would prefer you leave your pets at home and hire a pet sitter to come and take care of them in their own homes.  All animals do much better when they get to stay in a familiar place, their home.  They can sleep in their own beds, play with their own toys, eat and drink out of their own bowls.  In-home pet care reduces stress and anxiety on your pets while you are away.  Pet Sitters can either come many times during the day or offer overnight pet care where they stay overnight in your home.  In either case, not only are they taking care of your pets but they are also taking care of your home while you are gone.
NOTE:  If you are in the Lake County Illinois area, please feel free to call us to set up your inhome consult at (847) 886-4648 or check out our website at http://www.snagglefoot-roundlake.com.

Boarding
Boarding your dog or cat at a kennel is a good choice if your dog is friendly and sociable. Dogs can readily adapt to staying at a kennel, especially if they were introduced to it at a young age. It's a good idea, though, to leave him for short periods, such as weekends, before leaving him for a longer trip.  For cats, you need to talk with the boarding facility on how they handle the care of cats.

Pet Friendly Hotels and Campgrounds
If you don't want to leave your pets behind, there are a lot more pet friendly hotels and campgrounds now than ever.  In fact, when you Google hotels and/or campgrounds they are now listing them as pet friendly or not.  If your dog or cat can be left alone in a strange place without tearing the place apart, then a pet friendly hotel or campground might be your answer.  Check first to see what their policies are in regards to animals in the room.
NOTE:  You can also see if there are any pet sitters in the area that might come and take care of your pets in the hotel while you are out sightseeing.  A lot of pet sitting businesses provide hotel care for guests.  Check with the hotel manager or concierge.. they may already know a few pet sitting businesses in the area.

Your Neighbor
If you happen to have a neighbor that loves your pets and doesn't mind taking care of them while you are gone, this is a wonderful option to use when traveling.

So don't worry, there are lots of options out there for you so go ahead and order that plane ticket and start packing!

Gargoyles (Genesis/Mega Drive)

Gargoyles Genesis title screen
Developer:Disney Interactive|Release Date:1995|Systems:Genesis

Today on Super Adventures, I'm taking a look at Genesis/Mega Drive platformer Gargoyles, because everyone keeps asking me to. Apparently it's got some fans. Actually thinking about it, this is really just a Genesis game, as it was only released in the US and never made it to the Mega Drive regions.

It's based on the Disney cartoon of the same name that started in 1994, which ran for three seasons but somehow passed me by every time. I only caught the one episode and I don't remember it, so my knowledge of it is kind of limited. I do remember that it stars Keith David and half the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation... but that's entirely irrelevant as it's a 16-bit cartridge platformer so I'm likely to get 4 words of dialogue out of this at best.

Well I'm only assuming it's a platformer to be honest, I haven't actually checked, but it's an early-mid 90s cartoon tie-in so what else is it going to be? Look on my Game Series page, click 'Disney' and see how many of them aren't platformers. And that ain't because I've been deliberately avoiding all the 'Animaniacs' first person shooters.

High level of difficulty as a game design component

Dark Souls, Demons Souls, Lords of the Fallen and even the simple mobile game Flappy Bird have one thing in common: a challenging gameplay with a high level of difficulty. Destined to a specific kind of player, this type of game invites to a deeper gameplay experience.

Another game that suits as an example for this discussion is PHASES: INFINITE ZERO (Ketchapp, US, 2014). In this game, you command a small ball to the left and to the right, trying to escape from every black piece on the interface. Check the gameplay below:

A ludic experiment like PHASES puts the idea of procedural rhetoric in another landing place. As Bogost says (2007, p.3) “just as verbal rhetoric is useful for both the orator and the audience, and just as written rhetoric is useful for both the writer and the reader, procedural rhetoric is useful for both the programmer and the user, the game designer and the player”.

We discussed about anxiety as a game design component in another post. The subject of this post complements this idea and gives us some new ways to think about gaming creative processes, and teaches us how to work bad feelings in a ludic way.

Wolfenstein: The New Order (PC)

Wolfenstein: The New Order logo
Developer:MachineGames|Release Date:2014|Systems:PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One

Today’s game on Super Adventures is recent first person shooter Wolfenstein: The New Order, which is the something like the seventh game in the series, and the fifth single player first person shooter. Who even knew there were so many of the things?

That's not even counting the original pair of Castle Wolfenstein stealth games by Muse software that inspired the id Software franchise. Not that The New Order was made by id, nope they haven’t developed a Wolfenstein game themselves since 1992’s Spear of Destiny. This is actually the debut release by MachineGames, formed in 2009 by seven key members of Escape from Butcher Bay developer Starbreeze. I try to come into games with an open mind, without studying reviews and bringing too many expectations, but I have to be honest with you here: I'm expecting to love the shit out of this one. A sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein by the people who made an actual good game out of Chronicles of Riddick? Fuck yeah, sign me up for that.

I'll be playing the PC version due to the system's convenient mouse and keyboard full of potential screenshot keys (and because it's the one I own), but it should work out well because I believe that all formats got pretty much the same game here. As usual I plan to stick with the game long enough to reach the regular gameplay and get a decent impression of how it plays, so be aware that I'll likely end up spoiling huge chunks of the first hour or so. No seriously, I get the impression that this actually has some kind of worthwhile plot to it.

(Click screenshots to view them slightly bigger, but not by much. Let's not go crazy here.)

Wolfenstein 3D (MS-DOS)

Wolfenstein 3D title screen
Developer:id |Release Date:1992|Systems:DOS, SNES, Mac, Jaguar, 3DO, GBA, Apple IIGS, PC-98, Archimedes, etc.

Today on Super Adventures I have another requested game for you: Wolfenstein 3D, or (Wolfenstein 3-D according to the title screen). And it's got the Nazi Party's theme tune playing right now as its title song, that's just... great.

This of course is the earliest first person shooter ever made, except for all those other ones that came before it. Even if you don't want to count things like 1974's Maze War, 1980's Battlezone, or even 1987's MIDI Maze, you've got id Software's own Hovertank 3D and Catacomb 3D released a year earlier. Granted they don't have assault rifles, but they're so similar in style and gameplay to Wolfenstein 3D that it's hard for me to look at them and say they're not the same genre.

Either way this is definitely the first of the Wolfenstein series; except it kinda isn’t as it was inspired by a 1981 stealthy action-adventure called Castle Wolfenstein and its sequel Beyond Castle Wolfenstein. When id Software realised the trademark had lapsed and was up for the taking, they took it and made their own series out of it. And I don't blame them, as it's a cool title.

Is it the first World War II themed first person shooter at least? I've no idea, but let's say yes. Medal of Honor, Call of Duty... they're all this game's fault. Anyway, I have played Wolfenstein 3D before, but not recently and not for long. In fact I've never even finished a single episode, so that's what I'm planning to do now.

Thomas Was Alone: a gaming masterpiece

In 2010, I played a strange indie game created with Adobe Flash, in which you command a group of squares with special powers, trying to solve puzzles with these pieces. In that occasion, I played the game a few times and never remembered the name of it.

Five years later, during a board game session, a friend of mine evoked this game again: Thomas Was Alone. I downloaded it for PS4 and now I’m experiencing the game in a whole new scenario of interactive possibilities.

Thomas Was Alone is an indie puzzle platform video game created by Mike Bithell and nowadays it’s possible to play it also in Android, PlayStation 3, iOS and other platforms. The idea is simple: you command squares with “special powers” (one with high level jump, other with swimming abilities etc.) and, level by level, you need to fit the characters in their correspondent slots.

Wait. Did you say characters? Yes. Thomas Was Alone, besides its abstract conception, has an incredible narrative focus. There’s a very interesting storytelling behind the simple square forms, talking about technology, freedom, ideology and relationship.

Check the trailer and the gameplay:

This kind of game teaches us how to balance mechanics and simple graphics with immersive story. Thomas Was Alone is a class of elegant game design. If you have never played it, I strongly recommend it.

My Dog Is Peeing Blood!! What Is Happening?

BY:  Laurie Brzostowski, President, Snaggle Foot Dog Walks and Pet Care-Round Lake, IL

On Thursday 2/12/15 I had the biggest scare of my life with my doggie Sebastian.  When he went out to pee all that came out was blood.  Thank goodness there was snow on the ground or I may not have even noticed it.

My heart started racing and I was scared for him.  I called the vet and rushed him in immediately.  They kept him there to get a urine sample and for those 3 hours I was frantically searching the internet for what could be the problem.  I knew it was probably his kidneys but I wasn't sure.

So, after doing some research I thought I would share with you what happens when your doggie pees blood !

Just like human kidneys, your dog's kidneys balance certain substances in the blood and filter out the body's wastes as urine. They maintain normal concentrations of salt and water in the body. Kidneys also help control blood pressure, aid in calcium metabolism and sustain phosphorous levels. Additionally, they manufacture a hormone that encourages red-blood cell production. When kidneys don't function properly, toxins build up in the blood and a dog will become ill.

What Causes Kidney Problems in Dogs?
Acute kidney failure is an abrupt decline in function that occurs over a period of days. Dogs can develop acute kidney problems as a result of ingesting toxins, including antifreeze, certain medications, tainted foods, etc. Other reasons for this type of kidney failure include decreased blood flow or oxygen delivery to the kidneys, infections and urinary obstruction.

While some kidney problems have an immediate cause that can be treated, chronic kidney disease shows up over a period of time and its causes are harder to determine. This condition develops slowly and affects mostly older dogs. It is often caused by underlying illness and congenital and hereditary conditions. But surprisingly, a main cause of chronic kidney failure in dogs is dental disease. Bacteria associated with advanced dental disease enter the blood stream and invades multiple organs, causing irreversible damage to the heart, liver and kidneys.

What Are Some Signs of Kidney Problems in Dogs?

•         Change in water consumption
•         Change in volume of urine produced
•         Depression and listlessness
•         Loss or decreased appetite
•         Chemical odor of breath
•        Vomiting
•         Weight loss
•         Blood in urine
•         Mouth ulcers
•         Pale gums
•         Stumbling, acting drunk

If your dog shows any of the above symptoms, please take her to see your veterinarian immediately.

How Can Kidney Problems Be Prevented?
To prevent kidney problems due to poisoning, make sure your dog does not have access to potentially dangerous substances and that she is supervised at all times when outside. Do not give your dog any over-the-counter medications without instruction by your veterinarian, and make sure that your dog has access to fresh water at all times. Proper oral hygiene helps to maintain good overall health.

How Are Kidney Problems Treated?
It is important to kidney failure be identified and treatment begun it its earliest stage.  Your veterinarian can determine if kidney disease is present and start appropriate treatment. Depending on whether the problem is acute or chronic, treatment may include the following:

•         Drugs that encourage urine production
•         Fluid therapy
•         Management of blood electrolyte abnormalities
•         Monitoring of urinary output
•         Control of vomiting
•         Medication for gastrointestinal problems
•         Dialysis
•         Dietary Management
•         Correction of anemia
•         Management of high blood pressure
•         Therapy for any specific underlying causes identified (example: antifreeze toxicity, infection)

What Happens if Kidney Problems Go Untreated?
Kidney problems often lead to life-threatening conditions that require immediate hospitalization and treatment. If left untreated, end-stage kidney failure will occur, leading to a fatal outcome.

Thankfully my doggie Sebastian is on the road to recovery.  He is taking antibiotics twice per day and I am so happy to report that he is no longer peeing blood.  If you EVER seen blood in your dogs urine, please contact your veterinarian immediately.
